British Airways Fined £183 Million Amid Data Breach

In the UK, British Airways has been facing a record fine of £183 million for the last years data breach of its security systems. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has put the fine on the national carrier for breaching private data.

The British Airways owned by IAG said it was a surprise and disappointment to see ICO has levied heavy penalty on British Airways, the hackers had conducted the latest and sophisticated attack on the BA website.

The ICO said it is the biggest penalty ever issued by the organization and it has to be public under the new rules. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect last year in the United Kingdom, it is the biggest overhaul of the data protection and privacy within the last 20 years.

The fine imposed on BA would also be the first to make public after the new rules have been enforced. Earlier Facebook faced the biggest penalty of £500,000 for the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, it was the maximum penalty under the old rules, Reuters reported. BA now has 28 days to appeal, the company said earlier that 380,000 transactions were affected due to the hack however, the data stolen didn’t include the travel or passport details.
