BYD brings Dolphin Surf to Germany

BYD brings a compact electric small car to Germany with the Dolphin Surf. The Chinese manufacturer relies on extensive equipment and an introductory price under 20,000 euros. The first deliveries of the front-wheel drive model are planned for June 2025.
New competitor in the electro-small car segment
The Chinese car manufacturer BYD starts selling its compact electric model Dolphin Surf in Germany. With a length of 3.99 meters, a width of 1.72 meters and a height of 1.59 meters, the car arranges in the classic small car segment. The wheelbase is 2.5 meters, which is generous for this vehicle class and promises more interior. BYD offers the Dolphin Surf in three equipment lines: Active, Boost and Comfort. The entry-level version Active and the middle boost variant have a 65 kW electric motor (88 hp). The top version Comfort comes with an 115 kW unit (156 hp). All models have front -wheel drive and are limited to 150 km/h.

In the case of batteries, BYD relies on LFP technology (lithium iron phosphate). This is characterized by robustness, high security and low costs. However, the technology also has disadvantages: a lower energy density and a pronounced sensitivity to the cold. The WLTP range is up to 220 km on the Active model with 30 kWh battery, the larger 43.2 kWh battery The boost and comfort models has up to 322 km.
Prices and equipment
The entry price for the BYD Dolphin Surf is 19,990 euros. The Chinese manufacturer is thus positioning itself significantly among many established competitors in the electrical car segment. The standard equipment includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen in the cockpit, voice control and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The safety equipment also includes various driving assistance systems with a distance of distance, lane assistant and emergency brake system. The trunk of the BYD Dolphin Surf holds 308 liters, and the volume extends to 1,037 liters in folded back seats. No bad values for a vehicle in this size class and quite competitive.

Expansion plans in Europe
BYD has big plans for the European market. The company plans to expand its retail network in Germany from 28 to 120 locations by the end of the year. In addition, the manufacturer is planning to open a production plant in Hungary this year. The Dolphin Surf is already the tenth model that BYD offers in Germany.
The company, founded in 1995, originally started as a battery manufacturer and has now become the world’s largest producer of electric vehicles. In 2023, BYD even overtook Tesla in pure electric car purchases if you include plug-in hybrids.
