BMW is analyzing the necessity of car keys, whether customers need keys anymore or not. The BMW company owners feel that everyone owns a smartphone. Why have car keys if you can have a BMW App to unlock your vehicle. They feel that keys are the old fashioned concept of opening a car, with technology advancing, better-advanced methods should be used.
Robertson, Member of Board Management of BMW feels that there is no need for car keys, as he said, “Honestly, how many people really need it. They never take it out of their pocket, so why do I need to carry it around?”
On the point of replacing the keys with BMW app, he said, “We are looking at whether it is feasible, and whether we can do it. Whether we do it right now or at some point in the future, remains to be seen.”
Now, in theory, BMW app will allow users to unlock their cars but there are technical issues that remain unresolved. Internet connection would have to be perfect at all times for this to work, which in current times is unlikely.
