In the run-up to CES 2023, Samsung presented two new ARM-based notebooks that are equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs instead of the usual x86-based AMD or Intel chips. Samsung covers both the lower and the upper end of the market.
With the Galaxy Book 2 Go, Samsung is launching the first inexpensive Windows notebook with the ARM SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c+ Gen 3. The chip was only introduced about six months ago and is being installed in a commercial product for the first time. Compared to its predecessor, it is said to offer around 40 percent more CPU and around 35 percent more graphics performance.
The Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Go is a type of ultra-mobile notebook and is expected to be available in stores for the first time in January, although the manufacturer has not yet announced a price. Otherwise, the technical equipment is still somewhat covered, but it can be assumed that initially, only a variant without mobile phone support will appear. The LTE and 5G-enabled models will likely follow later in the year.
The new ARM notebook from Samsung has a 14-inch full HD display and weighs 1.44 kilograms with a thickness of 15.5 millimeters. Among other things, Samsung advertises that the new Galaxy Book 2 Go will be equipped with an NVMe SSD, but does not provide any information about the memory or RAM. What is certain, however, is that the device is certified according to the US military standard 810G, i.e. it should withstand falls from a height of up to 1.2 meters.
Thanks to the energy-saving ARM platform, the Galaxy Book 2 Go should be able to achieve a maximum runtime of up to 21 hours. In everyday use, however, a good 10 hours should be possible, since Samsung’s runtime specification is based on playing a video with reduced screen brightness.
The Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 is now also available as an ARM-based new edition of a larger stylus-equipped notebook from Samsung with a 360-degree hinge. The device was first introduced in South Korea and offers a 13.3-inch Super AMOLED display with Full HD resolution and pen support. With a height of just 11.5 millimeters and a weight of 1.05 kilograms, the Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 is extremely thin and light.
Under the hood, the new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 is doing its job, whose eight computing cores have now reached the level of a laptop CPU from the Intel Core i5 series in terms of pure performance. Again, Samsung is silent on the subject of memory. At least a price is mentioned because the high-end 2-in-1 laptop starts in Korea at a price of around 1550 dollars.
The customer gets a broader package of connectivity options, including WiFi 6E and an integrated 5G modem. There are three USB Type-C ports, a 3.5mm jack, and a microSD card reader. In addition, Samsung’s latest ARM PC has a 1080p webcam, a fingerprint reader, Dolby Atmos, and two 4-watt speakers. The running time is even given as an enormous 30 hours.
