China catches a thief in a concert of 60,000 people with Facial recognition

Chinese police have successfully located and apprehended a man wanted for economic crimes among the crowd of 60,000 in a concert.

The suspect’s mistake was, he attended the pop concert by a star Jacky Cheung in Nanchang City last weekend when he was busted. He never knew Chinese Police could catch him in a flock of people. He was only identified as Mr. Ao. The police also stated that the man was shocked when he was surrounded and apprehended by the policemen.

It is not only a shock for the suspect but also for many around the world, the nation has developed an AI-based Facial recognition system which performed miraculously well where almost everyone looks the same is shocking for half of the world.

China has a gigantic surveillance network with more than 170 million CCTV cameras, the cameras at the entrance of the concert where Mr. Ao was buying ticket recognized him, the police later caught him when he was enjoying the concert inside. The suspect was astounded when police caught him and took him away, “Police Officer Li Jin told the state news agency Xinhua.”

China is leading Artificial Intelligence technology while the US is lagging behind 

There were several cameras at the ticket entrance of the concert that were equipped with facial recognition technology Mr. Li from Hounggutan police station in Nanchang city told the China Daily.

What a surprise

The suspect Mr. Ao reportedly drove 90km away from Zhangshu to Nanchang accompanying his wife for the concert. He said, “If I knew I would have never gone to the concert”.

But this is not the first time that Chinese police have successfully utilized facial recognition system to catch the suspects. Last year in August, police arrested 25 suspects in Shandong province using this technology which was set up at the Qingdao International Beer Festival.

China has become a world leader in facial recognition technology; the system now makes it impossible to escape authorities with 170 million plus camera surveilling them. The Asian country is building the “world’s largest camera surveillance network”. While China already has more than 170 million CCTV camera in place, the authorities are focusing on installing 400 million more cameras to the network within the next three years.

However, not all but many CCTV cameras installed on public places use AI system and facial recognition technology.
