Chinese display manufacturers are attempting to invalidate a patent for Samsung Display OLED

As a result of Samsung Display’s prior attempts to prevent imports of third-party displays that might be infringing on its innovations, a number of Chinese display makers are apparently banding together and competing against the firm in the USA.

In accordance with a recent report from The Elec, Chinese companies i.e., BOE, CSOT, Tianma, and Visionox have collaborated against Samsung Display. These companies have filed a trial for patent invalidation with the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. One Samsung Display patent-protected technology in particular is being challenged by the four Chinese display manufacturers. Notably, the companies are making efforts to invalidate U.S. Patent No. 7,414,599. It is relevant to the OLED tech that is actually “Organic Light Emitting Display (OLED) Device Pixel Circuit and Driving Method.”

Are Chinese panel makers fessing up to copying Samsung technology?

As mentioned earlier, the business fought against imports of OLED panels that infringe on its patents and technology. It’s interesting to note that this is one of the patents Samsung Display mentioned in their investigation with the US International Trade Commission back in December.

In response to this situation, the South Korean company didn’t go against Chinese manufacturers instead the company decided to ban importers from importing such panels to the US. As a result, the Chinese display manufacturers have responded to this situation by filing a case for patent invalidation. The four companies are resisting the import bans.  In a roundabout manner, this may be seen as an admission of guilt for exploiting Samsung technologies without a license to manufacture screens.

Back in May, BOE initiated several patent infringement lawsuits against Samsung and its associated holdings in China. It targeted different sectors of the company like investment, vision, Semiconductors, and other units that have no association to display technologies. Now, four Chinese companies have joined forces to fight against one Samsung Display OLED patent in the US.

As of now, there is no development on this matter neither the trial has begun. Currently, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board is working to determine the health of the invalidation claim.
