Copilot soon also in classic Outlook: blessing or annoying AI extra?

Smart, always present, but controversial: Microsoft will anchor Copilot in the classic Outlook from August 2026. A menu provides AI suggestions directly in the email flow. However, previous design mistakes are already raising serious concerns among many users.

AI assistant for emails

Users of the classic Outlook for Windows will receive a visible innovation in August 2026. The software company integrates a dedicated button for its AI assistant Copilot directly into the email program’s user interface. The aim is to make artificial intelligence an integral part of the daily work interface and to simplify access to intelligent functions. The new starting point should be above the actual workspace and capture the context of the open content. Microsoft is thus aligning the design of the classic mail client with other programs in the Office package. Appropriate access is already available in applications such as Word, Excel or PowerPoint. The standardization is intended to help users find their way around more quickly and use the generative text functions without a long search.

Like Microsoft in its current roadmap the system should directly suggest relevant actions. This means the workflow is not interrupted. Instead of distributing different touch points across the surface, the tool is anchored as a connected system. The integration offers uniform operation across all programs. One disadvantage is the possible loss of screen space due to new buttons.

Criticism of previous design

In the past, the placement of the assistant was not always met with approval. Other programs introduced a floating button in the bottom right corner, overlying the document. Many users found this annoying. Microsoft then reacted and submitted options. Users can now choose from different displays in the settings or switch off the copilot completely. It is still unclear whether Outlook will offer similar customization options. Where exactly the new access will be placed in the classic email client is currently not conclusively clarified. It is likely to be integrated into the top menu bar. It also remains to be seen whether existing AI functions for direct message writing will be adapted or remain in their current form.
