New era of gaming for Mac users

Mac gamers can look forward to: CD Projekt Red is bringing its sci-fi hit Cyberpunk 2077 to Apple computers for the first time in early 2025. The Ultimate Edition, which also includes the Phantom Liberty expansion, will be released exclusively for Macs with Apple Silicon chips (M processors).

The Polish developer promises to fully exploit the performance of the M chips. To achieve this, they rely on advanced technologies such as path tracing, frame generation and integrated spatial audio. These features are intended to ensure a particularly immersive gaming experience and attractive graphics.

Technical challenges overcome

Cyberpunk 2077 is considered an extremely resource-hungry game that pushes even high-end PCs to their limits. The porting to macOS therefore represents a considerable technical achievement. According to CD Projekt Red, the Mac version makes optimal use of Apple’s Metal graphics interface.

When optimizing the image, you will probably rely on AMD’s FSR 3 technology for frame generation (via wccftech), as Apple does not yet offer its own solution. Apple’s in-house MetalFX upscaling should also be used to improve performance.

Availability and compatibility

The Ultimate Edition of Cyberpunk 2077 will be available on the Mac App Store and Steam. Owners of the PC version on Steam can transfer the game to Mac for free. It remains unclear which specific Apple silicon chips are required for which graphics settings.

From problem child to showcase project

The bumpy launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020 is still fresh in the minds of many players. However, numerous patches and the extensive Phantom Liberty update have significantly improved the game. Mac users now benefit from this development and directly receive the sophisticated Ultimate Edition.

Cyberpunk 2077 is based on the pen and paper role-playing game series Cyberpunk by Mike Pondsmith. The game is set in the dystopian metropolis Night City and focuses on corporations, crime and body modification. Since its release, it has sold over 25 million copies and is considered a commercial success despite initial problems.
