DeLorean: The sports car manufacturer returns to the electric car future
Most readers here will know that the time travel of a DeLorean DMC-12 requires almost exactly 1.21 gigawatts. The DeLorean EVolved will need a little less as the automotive legend is expected to return as a more or less conventional electric vehicle. Back to the Future was released in theaters 37 years ago and starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, the film is arguably one of the most important science fiction/time travel movies of all time. That’s why you don’t need to explain further that the main role is actually played by a car, namely a DeLorean DMC-12.
The car with its typical gull-wing doors was produced for almost two years between the beginning of 1981 and the end of 1982 and only about 9,000 vehicles were made. Today they are sought-after collector’s items, which is of course also due to the Robert Zemeckis film series. But in the future, you may see more DeLoreans on the streets again.
Premiere of the DeLorean EVolved in 2022
Although these cannot fly or run on garbage, electricity will play a role. Because the DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) promised their return in a tweet. It says somewhat cryptically, “The future is never promised. Think again today. Sign up for the DeLorean premiere in 2022.” Also attached to the tweet is a 15-second video showing the silhouette of the iconic car and its gull-wing doors.
Not much information is available (okay, none really), so it’s not even possible to speculate on what this comeback will look like. The only thing that is clear is that the car will be called the DeLorean EVolved and will be an electric car. However, it’s also possible that the DeLorean Motor Company is only marketing here, because all you can currently buy on the website are overpriced fan items such as t-shirts and hoodies.
