Back in October 2023, the South Korean firm Samsung declared that Samsung Wallet would soon support digital state IDs. The company made the announcement during the SDC 2023. According to reports, in the initial stage, the new feature will be introduced to US users. However, the availability of the new feature will be different depending on the state. Reportedly, the new feature is now accessible in Arizona and Iowa. Arizonans can now save digital versions of their IDs in Samsung Wallet thanks to the state’s recent action.
The first state to provide a Samsung Wallet for displaying and carrying these IDs is Arizona. Arizona users can now store digital forms of driver’s license and state ID in the Samsung Wallet app, claims the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Division. However, Samsung Wallet is not the only one that supports digital IDs. Apple and Google Wallet apps have already added support for residents of Arizona to store their digital IDs. When it comes to adopting this technology, Arizona adopts a more robust approach than other states. So, it is not surprising at all that Arizona has added Samsung Wallet to the list.
According to the company, Iowa is the other state that will use Samsung Wallet to store digital state IDs in the future. Iowa may act on this shortly as well. While some governments might take their time to allow this facility, in the end, the great majority of states will enable it for their citizens as well.
