The images reveal the stacked L3 cache and the processor’s inner components, showcasing a striking color contrast between layers.

A Strong Start for AMD’s Newest CPU

Although AMD only launched the Ryzen 7 9800X3D on November 7, demand for the chip has already been tremendous. Initial stocks were snapped up within hours, leading to worldwide sellouts. Those looking to get their hands on this in-demand CPU now face either a long wait or hefty reseller prices on sites like eBay.

Inside the Processor: What Makes the Ryzen 7 9800X3D Special?

One of the primary draws of the 9800X3D is its 3D V-Cache, which contributes significantly to its strong gaming performance. A user on the Chinese platform Bilibili recently shared a teardown video of the processor, exposing the Complex Core Die (CCD) and 3D V-Cache.

The dismantling process wasn’t straightforward: since AMD solders the CPU cover, the user needed to use a welding torch to access the chip’s internals. In this model, the CCD and 3D V-Cache are stacked in a novel configuration. Unlike previous models like the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, where the cache was positioned above the CCD, AMD moved the CCD to the top in the 9800X3D to improve heat dissipation. This arrangement removes the L3 cache as a thermal barrier between the CPU and the heat spreader, enhancing cooling efficiency.

For hardware enthusiasts, the disassembled 9800X3D offers impressive visuals. The CCD stands out with a deep blue hue, while the cache shimmers in a golden color, creating an eye-catching contrast. Composite images shared on social media provide a closer look at these layered components.

While the images don’t unveil any groundbreaking secrets, the processor’s design closely resembles that of the Ryzen 9000 series, with a cache structure similar to the 7000X3D lineup.

What’s Next: Upcoming Processors with 3D V-Cache

Looking ahead, AMD is expected to unveil the Ryzen 9 9900X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D, both featuring 3D V-Cache, at CES in January 2025. These processors are anticipated to offer even greater performance than the 9800X3D, and fans hope AMD will provide a larger initial stock to meet demand and avoid shortages.
