EA Origin Will Soon Retire
With its app, EA was the first publisher to launch its own launcher to compete with Steam. After 14 years, the application is now being retired. Users must transfer their games and save games to the new app.
EA is sending Origin into retirement
Electronic Arts has been selling its video games directly through EA Origin since 2011. For some time, titles like FIFA or Anno were only available in digital form for the PC via the company’s own app. In September 2020, the publisher also launched EA Desktop, a successor to Origin, which is now only known as the EA App. Since then, the two launchers have existed side by side. But as the company now says in a short message on its website website announced that EA Origin will soon be completely discontinued.
The service will be switched off on April 17, 2025. The reason given is that Microsoft is discontinuing support for 32-bit software. Users still using Origin are encouraged to switch to the 64-bit EA app by the deadline. You can find them directly in our download area, among other things.
What users need to consider
Anyone using a 32-bit version of Windows 10 must therefore upgrade to the 64-bit version of the operating system or make the leap to Windows 11. For devices that don’t support 64-bit, EA doesn’t seem to offer an alternative solution. Users with older PCs like this seem to be left out in the cold. For everyone else, importing your own games is incredibly easy.
All you need to do is log in with the account in the EA app that was also used with Origin. Games that have already been installed do not have to be downloaded and installed again, but are retained. If automatic saving in the cloud was activated in Origin, the corresponding saves will also be synchronized. Otherwise a manual transfer is necessary. However, EA does not guarantee that installed mods will still work after the change.
Also play on Steam
If you would rather do without the publisher’s launcher entirely, almost all of EA’s games have been available on Steam since 2019. Last spring even some 90s hits like Command & Conquer, Dungeon Keeper and Populous were added. But brand new titles like Dragon Age: The Veilguard are also available on Valve’s platform.
