Production of the iPhone 17 has begun

There have been rumors about the iPhone 17 for months. After the iPhone 16 came with moderate innovations – apart from Apple Intelligence – Apple’s next smartphone is set to receive the biggest design update since the iPhone X.

What that means exactly is still unclear. An Apple partner company in India has now started early production of the iPhone 17, according to Internet portal The Information, which cites information from people familiar with the matter. But this is not about mass production of smartphones on a large scale. Rather, the prototype of the device is converted into a version suitable for mass production.

Production quality tests

This process, called New Product Introduction (NPI), takes place at the manufacturer Foxconn’s factory in Bangalore. According to the report, the process is currently in the so-called Proto-1 phase, in which several thousand units of the device are produced in order to then test the manufacturing quality. The design is therefore already dry.

Leaks are slowly gaining momentum

In the last few weeks, the rumor mill surrounding the iPhone 17 had picked up speed. It was said that the next smartphone from Cupertino could finally be equipped with a ProMotion display in the standard version that supports always-on. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max could also receive several upgrades. This will include a 48-megapixel telephoto camera on the back and a 24-megapixel selfie camera.

Most recently, John Ternus, the current Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering at Apple and designated successor to CEO Tim Cook, heated things up again. He said the iPhone 17 was the “most ambitious [iPhone] in the history of the product”. But what exactly Ternus was referring to remained unclear. The next iPhone is currently not expected to be released before September 2025. Until then, a lot of information and rumors about Apple’s next smartphone are likely to emerge.
