Electronic Arts Shares Preliminary Q3 FY25 Results: Dragon Age: The Veilguard and EA SPORTS FC 25 Fall Short of Expectations

Electronic Arts (EA) is set to release its full financial results for the fiscal year 2025 third quarter on February 4, 2025. However, a preliminary results announcement today has provided insight into the performance of some of its key titles, including Dragon Age: The Veilguard and EA SPORTS FC 25. Unfortunately, both games have underperformed when compared to EA’s net bookings expectations.
Underwhelming Performance for Dragon Age and EA SPORTS FC 25
“During Q3, we continued to deliver high-quality games and experiences across our portfolio; however, Dragon Age and EA SPORTS FC 25 underperformed our net bookings expectations,” said EA CEO Andrew Wilson.
While no detailed sales figures were disclosed, Wilson noted that the EA SPORTS FC franchise faced a “slowdown” after showing strong momentum earlier in the year.
Meanwhile, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, launched on October 31, 2024, has seen approximately 1.5 million players engage with the game across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms. Despite breaking EA records for concurrent player numbers on Steam, the game fell far short of the company’s expectations, which had been closer to doubling that figure.
It’s unclear whether the reported 1.5 million player count includes only direct sales or also factors in players accessing the game via EA Play trials or EA Play Pro subscriptions.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard – A Mixed Reception and Challenges Post-Launch
Dragon Age: The Veilguard marked a significant return for the fantasy RPG franchise after a decade-long hiatus. The game featured a refreshed art style, a new story involving a mix of new and familiar characters, and the return of a well-known face as the primary antagonist. However, the reception has been mixed, with players sharing divided opinions on the game’s direction and execution.
Adding to the challenges for the title, it was announced last week that Veilguard’s game director, Corinne Busche, had departed from BioWare, raising further questions about the game’s post-launch trajectory.
EA Revises Revenue Projections for FY25
Alongside these game-specific updates, EA shared a revised outlook on its overall financial performance. The company had initially forecasted mid-single-digit percentage growth for its live service projects but has now downgraded expectations to a “mid-single-digit decline.” EA now projects net bookings in the range of $7 billion to $7.15 billion for the current fiscal year.
Despite these setbacks, Wilson expressed confidence in EA’s long-term growth strategy:
“We remain confident in our long-term strategy and expect a return to growth in FY26 as we execute against our pipeline,” he said.
