Elon Musk Hints at Flying Car Demo for New Tesla Roadster in 2025

Elon Musk hints in the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast that Tesla could demonstrate a flying car in 2025. The new roadster should contain “crazy technology” and its presentation will be “unforgettable”.
Musk promises a spectacular roadster demo
Tesla recently gave its Model 3 and Y more range with the help of new battery cells. The cheaper Model Y Standard is also available, which makes savings in many areas, such as hiding the glass roof behind a fabric cover. In addition, CEO Elon Musk now commented on the car manufacturer’s Roadster, which will soon be presented eight years after it was first announced. The Tesla boss announced that the company will “hopefully” demonstrate the new Roadster before the end of 2025. Musk indicated that the vehicle could have extraordinary capabilities.

In his current appearance in Joe Rogan Experience Podcast Musk described the planned presentation as “the most memorable product launch of all time,” without revealing any specific details. He compared the vehicle to James Bond cars, claiming: “If you combine all the James Bond cars together, it’s crazier than that.” Musk also made vague hints. When Rogan asked, Musk referred to his friend Peter Thiel, who once said the future should have flying cars: “I think if Peter wants a flying car, we should be able to buy one.” When Rogan asked if the prototype might have fold-out wings, Musk simply replied that he “couldn’t do the reveal before the unveiling.” But the roadster has the potential to “become the most memorable product launch of all time.”
Not the first time
The mention of flying cars is not new for Musk. In previous interviews he speculated about the integration of “crazy technology” into the Roadster. Experts suspect that eventual “flight” capabilities could be more likely achieved through cold air engines or fans that would briefly allow the vehicle to take off and hover. This technology is based on the SpaceX Draco engine system, which is already used in spacecraft.
Roadster with delay
The second-generation Tesla Roadster was originally announced in 2017, with production scheduled for 2020. Since then, the date has been pushed back several times. The ongoing delays led to prominent pre-orderers such as OpenAI boss Sam Altman and tech reviewer Marques Brownlee demanding their $50,000 deposits back and canceling their orders. The original Tesla Roadster was Tesla’s first electric car and revolutionized the automotive industry as the first production vehicle with a lithium-ion battery and a range of almost 400 kilometers.
After its unveiling in July 2006 at Santa Monica Airport, small series production began in March 2008 and ended in 2012. In total, around 2,450 roadsters were produced and sold worldwide. The Californian car manufacturer used the English sports car Lotus Elise as a basis. The model later gained even greater fame when Musk launched a red Roadster into space on the Falcon Heavy rocket in 2018, complete with a dummy named “Starman” at the wheel. The vehicle has been orbiting ever since and is the first production vehicle in the world to be launched into space.
Skepticism is appropriate when it comes to Musk’s promises
Musk’s announcements come as Tesla’s profits plunged 37 percent in the most recent quarter. Critics recall other Musk projects such as the loop system in Las Vegas, whose final implementation deviated significantly from the original promises. The Cybertruck, originally announced for 2021, only came onto the market in very limited numbers at the end of 2023 and has been plagued by problems ever since.
The same applies to the Optimus robot. Realistically speaking, developing a functional flying car seems very ambitious. Regulatory hurdles for flying vehicles are complex and time-consuming. If Tesla actually presents a prototype, it is very unlikely that it will become a market-ready product.
