End-to-end encryption: a war between Whatsapp and Snap

Whatsapp has just launched a new feature which is highly similar to Snapchat’s disappearing feature. It could threaten the growth of Snapchat at an international level after what it did today. In the new update there is feature for sharing photos, videos and GIFS that disappear within 24 hours. Basically, it is what Snapchat does and has its foundation on. The twist in the feature is based on end-to-end encryption. Whatsapp has end-to-end encryption deployed in its messaging which means that everything shared is safe. There is no interception of third party in your private conversations.

In November, the app tested the feature on its beta platform. Now it is news that the Status tab will be rolling out on iOs, Android and Windows phone. It’s a worldwide introduction aiming to slow down the value growth of Snapchat. Users can use it to watch update from people in their contact list and then send private replies. They can also shoot and draw on their images, write captions and send their final images to the entire contact list that they have chosen with an important privacy setting. If you’re planning on sending only specific media to certain people then this can be done through message threads.

End-to-end encryption an important feature for inclination to app

This is opening up new horizons for advertisement opportunities for Whatsapp as well. Instagram and Snap allow ads to be run. Whatsapp can add full screen advertisements in between friends’ statuses.

When Whatsapp launched almost 8 years ago the messaging style was based on AOL instant messenger. The status feature is now replacing the old feature of Messenger style away messages. “The original idea behind the project was to build an application that lets your friends and other contacts know what you’re up to,” CEO Jan Koum writes. Whatsapp boasts around 1.2 billion monthly users. These users are sending 60 billion messages per day. In these messages which are end-to-end encrypted there are 3.3. billion photos, 760 million videos and 80 million GIFs. The tech end of the game hints out a major threat to Snaps global presence and reliance on user generated content. This means that it will rely on existing users more or shift a focus on hardware or more professional content. Instagram already ripped off Snapchat’s features when it rolled out Instagram stories.

You can find the Whatsapp status in a separate tab. Instagram was bold enough to stick its feature on the top. However, there is a possibility that there will be more attraction of European, South American, and Eastern Europe to this feature providing that they are not on Snap.

We’re hoping this venture proves successful in reforming our messaging communication with solid privacy.
