Espionage: US Shots Down Chinese Weather Balloon

A few days ago, a Chinese weather balloon entered the airspace of the United States. Now the US military has taken the object out of the sky with fighter jets. The government accuses the People’s Republic of wanting to spy on strategic facilities.

The US Secretary of Defense has announced that the Air Force was able to stop the weather balloon off the coast of South Carolina. For this, an F-22 Raptor was used in conjunction with an AIM-9X Sidewinder missile. Local airspace was previously closed and operations at Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston airports were suspended. Ships also had to leave the relevant area due to the operation.

A Pentagon spokesman confirmed on Thursday that the balloon was clearly sent for espionage purposes. The course is said to have passed through sensitive facilities such as military bases and nuclear missile silos. US President Joe Biden was informed of the incident very quickly and decided to shoot down the balloon as soon as the launch no longer endangered anyone on the ground.

China denies espionage allegations

China denies the allegations and emphasizes that it was a civilian balloon. The weather balloon was used for meteorological purposes, accidentally got out of control, and then flew into US airspace. The incident could have an additional negative impact on the already tense relationship between China and the United States. After the balloon was spotted, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceled a trip to Beijing. The purpose of the trip was originally to ease tensions between the two countries.
