Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost on Track for Lunar Mission Success

Firefly Aerospace has announced that its lunar-bound Blue Ghost spacecraft is performing flawlessly on its journey to the moon. Launched on January 15 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the mission is progressing with remarkable precision.

In a recent update, Firefly shared that the spacecraft’s trajectory correction was so accurate that the mission team decided to skip a planned adjustment. “The team confirmed Blue Ghost’s first trajectory correction maneuver was performed with such accuracy we are skipping the next one,” Firefly shared in a post on X on Tuesday. “With Earth in the rearview mirror, we’re on cruise control until we reach the moon’s orbit and perform a Lunar Orbit Insertion in just a couple days. So long, and thanks for all the fish!”

As seen in the video above, Blue Ghost captured stunning footage of Earth from one of its onboard cameras, with sunlight creeping into the frame toward the end of the clip. The mission, officially known as Blue Ghost Mission 1 or “Ghost Riders in the Sky,” is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program and supports the Artemis campaign, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the moon.

Currently, Blue Ghost is on its way to the moon after spending 25 days in Earth orbit. The spacecraft will spend 16 days in lunar orbit before landing on March 2. Its designated landing site is near Mons Latreille, a volcanic feature within Mare Crisium, a large basin on the moon’s northeastern near side. Once on the surface, the Blue Ghost lander will deploy 10 scientific experiments and technology demonstrations, generating data to aid future manned lunar missions.

Speaking about the mission, Firefly CEO Jason Kim emphasized the team’s dedication to success: “We are fully focused on execution as we look to complete our on-orbit operations, softly touch down on the lunar surface, and pave the way for humanity’s return to the moon.”
