For the development of its XR headsets, Samsung established a dedicated team

Since last year, we have known that Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google are working on an XR product. There were no details regarding the launch or even the device. However, some rumors claimed that the company could debut it in late 2023 but it didn’t happen. As of now, we have received some fresh details regarding the company’s first XR headset.

‘Immersive Team’ is working on XR headset development

A separate team dedicated to working on the XR headset named ‘Immersive Team’ was formed by Samsung. It works under the supervision of the Samsung MX (Mobile Experience) division, reports Hankyung. Initially, there were a few team members that eventually grew to a team of 100 members. It is reported that the team could grow further in order to boost the development of the XR headset.

In addition to this, the report claims that the Immersive Team has experts from within the different departments like planning, technology development, and marketing of the company. Perhaps Samsung will announce its XR headset later this year. We can expect it to arrive alongside the company’s upcoming foldable series, which is set to debut in the second half of this year.

What will be the features of the XR headset?

Reports indicate that the headset could feature several 1.03-inch OLEDoS displays with around 3,500 ppi pixel density. eMagin (a company owned by Samsung Display) featured this microdisplay at the CES 2024 event. Furthermore, it might also feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ processor. With the help of this processor, the headset can drive two 4.3K resolution screens per eye at 90fps. According to reports, Google is working on the OS of the headset. It will be a customized Android version specific to mixed-reality headsets.

Furthermore, the device might feature several camera sensors. It could even use Qualcomm’s next-generation ISP (Image Signal Processor). Some other features that we can assume to be featured in the headset include Wi-Fi 7 connectivity and a powerful GPU and NPU. It is expected that the headset will arrive with a low price tag that will be compatible with Samsung’s products like smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
