Former Apple design chief Jony Ive now works for OpenAI
OpenAI is getting prominent reinforcements: Former Apple design chief Jony Ive is developing a new type of AI device with the AI company. The project could fundamentally change the way we interact with computers.
Prominent reinforcement for OpenAI
The New York Times now reports on an exciting collaboration: OpenAI, the leading company in the field of artificial intelligence, has brought one of the most renowned designers in the tech industry on board. There have been rumors about this for a long time. Former Apple chief designer Jony Ive is reportedly working with OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman on an ambitious new project, an unspecified AI-controlled hardware.
Ive, who was responsible for the iconic design of products such as the iMac, iPod and iPhone, left Apple in 2019 after around 27 years to start his own design firm LoveFrom. Since 2022, he has not done anything for Apple. Now he is returning to product development with the OpenAI project.
A new concept for AI hardware
Details about the planned device are still scarce, but Ive emphasized in his conversation with the New York Times that it will not be a smartphone-like product. Instead, the device will be designed from the ground up to make the most of the possibilities of generative AI. Ive and Altman are convinced that this approach can overcome the problems that have caused previous AI hardware projects to fail.
What does that mean? It’s still completely unclear. The OpenAI language model will serve as the AI backbone of the device. Ive and Altman have already recruited a team of around ten employees and plan to raise a billion dollars in venture capital by 2024. They believe that the advanced capabilities of AI will make it possible to handle complex user requests in a way that could fundamentally change expectations of hardware.
challenges
The challenges for Ive and Altman are enormous. Previous attempts to establish standalone AI devices have often failed because users preferred versatile smartphones for AI functions. To be successful, their hardware must offer transformative and convenient features that go beyond the capabilities of mobile devices.
A new chapter for the tech industry
This is not Ive’s first major project since leaving Apple. His company LoveFrom already works with companies such as Airbnb and Ferrari. For the luxury car manufacturer, Ive’s team developed the interior of the first fully electric Ferrari. For Jony Ive, however, this project marks an exciting return to product development in the computer sector.
After years of working on consumer devices at Apple, he is now venturing into the still young field of AI hardware. His expertise could prove crucial in turning AI technology into a user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing product.
