FritzOS 8.24: Fritz will distribute new beta firmware to 7 routers on May 1st

Before the long May weekend, Fritz is once again releasing fresh beta firmware for several FritzBox models. The updates take care of WiFi problems and ensure faster connections to game consoles.

Beta updates for the May long weekend

After a number of updates for Fritz boxes and repeaters were released last week, things have been rather quiet at Fritz in the past few days. Yesterday and the day before yesterday there were finally four small laboratory updates. Heading into the long weekend, there is now another batch of fresh beta firmware for several router models. An update with test firmware is now available for download for a total of seven FritzBoxes that are currently taking part in the laboratory. As with previous updates, only minor bugs will be fixed this time. A fresh version of FritzOS 8.24 is available for the following devices:

• FritzBox 5690 Pro – Version: 8.24-132059
• FritzBox 5690XGS – Version: 8.24-132065
• FritzBox 5590 Fiber – Version: 8.24-132056
• FritzBox 5530 Fiber – Version: 8.24-132048
• FritzBox 4690 – Version: 8.24-132064
• FritzBox 4060 – Version: 8.24-132050
• FritzBox 4050 – Version: 8.24-132062

WiFi problems are solved

All seven routers receive different WiFi bug fixes. The adjustments are the most extensive for the FritzBox 5690 Pro:

• WiFi
• Fixed: When a channel was set manually in the 5 GHz band, transmission was not always carried out with the maximum possible channel bandwidth
• Fixed: Limitation of channel bandwidth to 80 MHz in the 5 GHz band after restart (FritzBox 7690, 6690, 6690 Pro, 5690 Pro, 5690, 4690, FritzRepeater 3000AX, 6000)
• Fixed: Under “Wi-Fi connection” in the network device properties, connections with MLO were not displayed for devices with Wi-Fi 7 (all boxes with Wi-Fi 7)
• Fixed: Fixed reduced data throughput against Sony PS4 consoles
• Improvement: Stability increased

For the cable boxes 5590 and 5530 the list is comparable to the patch notes:

• WiFi
• Fixed: When the channel was set manually in the 5 GHz band, the maximum possible channel bandwidth was not always transmitted (FritzBox 5590 Fiber only)
• Fixed: Under “Wi-Fi connection” in the network device properties, connections with MLO were not displayed for devices with Wi-Fi 7 (all boxes with Wi-Fi 7)
• Fixed: Reduced data throughput against Sony PS4 consoles fixed (FritzBox 5590 Fiber only)
• Improvement: Stability increased (only FritzBox 5590 Fiber)

The update for the FritzBox 5690 XGS, however, is a little narrower.

• Internet
• Fixed: Locking devices on the guest network did not work as expected in parental controls
• WiFi
• Fixed: Under “Wi-Fi connection” in the network device properties, connections with MLO were not displayed for devices with Wi-Fi 7 (all boxes with Wi-Fi 7)

The FritzBoxes 4690, 4060 and 4050 also only receive two adjustments:

• WiFi
• Fixed: When a channel was set manually in the 5 GHz band, transmission was not always carried out with the maximum possible channel bandwidth
• Improvement: Stability increased

installation

As usual, anyone interested can find all the files required to manually install the new laboratory version on the Laboratory website from Fritz. After downloading and unpacking the provided zip file, the image it contains can be installed via the device’s user interface under “System” > “Update” and the “FritzOS file” tab. However, you should first make sure that the FritzBox 5690 is running either the last stable version of FritzOS or a previous beta version. If a beta is already installed, the update can be carried out directly using the automatic update function. In any case, it is advisable to create a backup copy of the device settings before installing firmware that is under development.
