Galaxy S25 Introduces Satellite Connectivity – With a Twist

The Samsung Galaxy S25 boasts powerful hardware, featuring Qualcomm’s advanced Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. One standout feature is its support for satellite connectivity, although Samsung hardly highlighted it during the launch event. Interestingly, the official spec sheet for the Galaxy S25 doesn’t list 5G NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) bands—and there’s a reason why.

Understanding Satellite Messaging on the Galaxy S25

The Galaxy S25 series is the first Android phone to include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Satellite technology. This feature lets you connect to a satellite when you’re out of mobile coverage, so you can send messages to emergency services or loved ones. It’s an impressive addition—but there’s a catch.

The Galaxy S25 comes with the hardware needed for satellite messaging, but Samsung hasn’t partnered directly with a satellite service provider. Instead, it’s up to mobile network operators to activate this feature by working with a satellite provider.

According to Christian Frhr. von der Ropp, an independent satellite and telecom consultant, Samsung has chosen a different strategy than Google and Apple. Unlike Samsung, Google and Apple have partnered directly with Skylo to enable seamless satellite messaging on their devices across all US networks.

Verizon Takes the Lead While Competitors Fall Behind

Verizon is the only US carrier providing free satellite messaging for the Galaxy S25, thanks to its partnership with Skylo announced last August. This allows Verizon customers to access satellite SOS messaging without any additional charges.

Meanwhile, T-Mobile, AT\&T, and other carriers have not yet confirmed support for satellite connectivity on the Galaxy S25. Although this may change down the line, there’s no clear timeline for if or when it will.

Is It Time to Explore Alternatives?

If satellite connectivity is a must-have, the Galaxy S25 may not be ideal unless you’re already with Verizon or open to switching. A more versatile option is the Pixel 9, which supports satellite messaging through Google’s partnership with Skylo. Unlike the S25, the Pixel 9 works with satellite services across all US carriers, offering greater flexibility.

The Galaxy S25’s satellite functionality is still limited, but it marks progress as smartphones continue to advance.
