The cryptocurrency Bitcoin has soared in recent weeks, which makes mining all the more interesting. At the same time, gamers have great problems getting the right top graphics cards. These two phenomena are of course related.
Bitcoin mining is everything else new, including the fact that graphics cards are used for it and bought up accordingly, is not new information. For a while, the scarcity of top graphics cards seemed to be easing, in part because the cryptocurrency exchange rate was far from the previous and current highs.
Bitcoin recently broke the long “magical” mark of $20,000 and since then – apart from the (strong) fluctuations typical for Bitcoin – it has been rising more or less constantly. Mining Bitcoins has become extremely interesting again, thanks to the new GPU generations, this can apparently also be done profitably.
Now, according to a report by Wccftech in China, a crypto mining farm was discovered or shown, which consists of hundreds of notebooks of the same model. The notebooks, which all have an Nvidia Geforce RTX 3000 Ampere graphics card, are stacked close together – and that looks quite impressive.
The notebooks are models from the Chinese manufacturer Hasee, the laptops have a mobile GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. This cannot be compared with the much more powerful desktop version, but miners get the notebooks for 600 dollars each if they buy them in bulk.
The latter is quite remarkable as it means that traders or even manufacturers tolerate or even support mining. In any case, this is not good news for gamers: Even if this is “only” the mobile version, in view of the current global chip crisis, such images do not bode well.
