GDDR7 memory chips may be released by Samsung by the end of 2024
Samsung declared in the middle of 2023 that it has finished developing GDDR7 memory chips. The Joint Electron Tube Engineering Council (JEDEC) has released the complete specs for the next generation of memory, bringing the firm closer than ever to the release of those memory chips. With their GDDR7 memory chips, Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix are in direct competition with one another.
Samsung gets closer to launching GDDR7 memory chips
On Tuesday, JEDEC released the official GDDR7 memory chip specs. With data transfer speeds of up to 192 GB/s per device, it provides improved performance. In order to provide 1.6 times more performance and dependability for AI, high-end gaming, and High-Performance Computing (HPC), Samsung has announced that it would release GDDR7 32Gbps memory chips. First-generation GDDR7 chips from Samsung and Micron have already been made public; their maximum bit rate is 24Gbit.
The first business in the world to finish developing GDDR7 SGRAM was Samsung. At a record-breaking bandwidth of up to 1.5TBps, the GDDR7 SGRAM chips surpass GDDR6 by 40%. As previously revealed, the PAM3 (Pulse-Amplitude Modulation) signaling technique, a new memory standard that permits 50% greater data flow in a single signaling cycle, enables these chips to operate at a per-pin speed of 32Gbps.
These new, incredibly fast memory chips are anticipated to be used by AMD and Nvidia in their upcoming GPUs. The RTX 5000 series GPUs from Nvidia are expected to be released later this year and are said to include GDDR7 memory chips for improved performance. It is anticipated that AMD will also utilize GDDR7 chips in its RDNA 4 architecture-based Radeon RX 8000 series GPUs.
“High-performance memory is required to process data at unprecedented speeds by AI, HPC, and high-end gaming,” stated YongCheol Bae, EVP, Head of Memory Product Planning, Samsung. 1.6 times better performance at the best reliability and cost-effectiveness will be attained with GDDR7 32Gbps.
