GDR4 prices doubled in one month: China influences market massive

The prices for certain types of RAM for servers, PCs and mobile devices have doubled within one month and remain at a high level. The background is speculation that China has changed its priorities.

Double prices within a very short time

According to a report by the Japanese economic service Nikkei Asia If the prices for GDR4 labor stores have increased massively within one month and have doubled. In June, the price for GDR4 dram modules with 8-gigabit capacity was last $ 4.12 per unit, while $ 3.14 per unit was due for 4 gigabit modules. This corresponds to a doubling of prices compared to the previous month of May. The prices continued to increase in July and have now reached its highest level since July 2021. Overall, it has been upward for a good three months. It is particularly problematic that GDR4 labor stores in the market are still dominated, since according to market researchers, around 60 percent of all newly sold desktop PCS DDR4-RAM is still still being used. Around 40 percent of new PCs are already coming with the more modern DDR5 labor memory.

It is the first time that the price for both types of GDR4 dram doubles within one month. The background of the price increases is an increased demand because there are indications that the Chinese manufacturer Changxin Memory Technologies (CXMT) could have set the production of DDR4-RAM. The company has not yet confirmed this, but corresponding rumors alone cause concerns that bottlenecks could occur. Previously, the three world’s largest memory manufacturers Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron had already started to download the production of GDR4 memory or completely give up.

The main reasons for this were that Chinese manufacturers like CXMT with dumping prices ensured that Samsung & Co is hardly possible for profitable production of DDR4-RAM chips. The fact that CXMT is now apparently the end of the GDR4 production now ensures that bottlenecks are feared. Supposedly, in the first half of 2026, it should be over, while attempts are made in parallel to raise the production of DDR5 storage. This is where CXMT not only follows its own strategy, but also instructions from the Chinese leadership, which wants to achieve greater independence from foreign manufacturers by rapidly switching to DDR5 from its own production.
