Google Brings More Apps to Cars with “Car Ready Mobile Apps” Program

Google is making it easier for developers to bring their apps to vehicles with the new “Car Ready Mobile Apps” program. This initiative simplifies app development for in-car use, paving the way for more entertainment options like games, streaming apps, and browsers in infotainment systems.

More Entertainment for Drivers

Until now, third-party app developers had limited support for creating apps compatible with Android Auto and Android Automotive. However, with the launch of the “Car Ready Mobile Apps” program, Google aims to change that. This new program requires minimal additional development effort, allowing for greater diversity in car-compatible apps.

Currently, Google is focusing on three categories: Games, Video, and Browsers. Soon, drivers won’t just stream music through apps like Spotify; they could also play games or watch series on platforms like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video—all from their car’s infotainment system.

Strict Guidelines for Safety

As with any in-car application, these apps must comply with Google’s “Car Ready Mobile Apps” guidelines. For example, video streaming or gaming will only be accessible when the car is parked, ensuring safety on the road. This feature could be particularly appealing to EV drivers, offering a fun way to pass the time while their car charges.

According to Google’s developer website, these apps will initially be available in vehicles with infotainment systems running Android Automotive, such as upcoming models from Porsche and Ford. Support for Android Auto is planned for the future, though Google hasn’t provided a specific timeline yet.

Android Auto Gets a Visual Refresh

While new apps are on the way, Google also rolled out updates for Android Auto’s interface. In December 2024, the platform introduced support for Material You design with Android Auto 13.4. This update allows users to customize their car display with accent colors that match their Android smartphone, improving the overall visual experience in the car.
