Google Calendar on the web has finally introduced the long-awaited dark mode, addressing a popular user request. This update, part of Google’s broader design enhancements, not only makes the interface more visually comfortable but also provides users greater control over their display preferences. The new look aligns with recent updates to other Google services like Gmail, Drive, and Docs.
Despite Google’s reputation for polished, feature-rich apps, some areas have lagged behind. Case in point: even after announcing a Material Design 3 refresh in October, which included dark mode support, the web version of Google Calendar did not immediately receive this feature. However, the wait is now over.
Dark mode is now available for both Google Workspace and personal Gmail accounts. Upon logging in, users will see a notification stating, “Calendar is now available in dark mode!” The new appearance settings allow you to choose between Light, Dark, or Device default modes, offering the flexibility to match your device’s theme or stick with light mode if preferred.
Previously, users relied on third-party browser extensions to enable dark mode for Google Calendar on the web. With this official update, Google warns that existing extensions might not function as intended due to compatibility issues.
To activate dark mode:
While the update is a significant improvement, there’s still room for refinement. For instance, the white background behind the Google logo in the top-right corner remains visually inconsistent with the dark theme.
In addition to dark mode, Google Calendar’s web interface has undergone a visual overhaul based on Material Design 3 guidelines. The redesign includes updated typography, enhanced controls, and a cleaner overall appearance, making the platform more modern and accessible. While these updates contribute to a better user experience, dark mode stands out as the most impactful enhancement.
With the rollout of dark mode, Google Calendar’s web version takes a big step toward meeting user expectations. The feature not only improves usability but also modernizes the interface, bringing it in line with Google’s other applications. While minor tweaks are needed to perfect the design, dark mode is undoubtedly a welcome addition.
