Google co-founders step down as Pichai takes the helm of the Parent Company ‘Alphabet’

Google-cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are stepping down as the CEO and president of parent company Alphabet (GOOGL). After 20 years of launching Google from a Menlo Park garage Page and Brin decided to step aside as Sundar Pichai takes the helm of the parent company Alphabet.

The CEO of Google Sundar Pichai will take control and become the CEO of Alphabet as well. The Google co-founders will still serve on the board of directors of Alphabet. They will have voting control over the business.

In a letter, they wrote, “We’ve never been ones to hold on to management roles when we think there’s a better way to run the company. And Alphabet and Google no longer need two CEOs and a President.”

Following the search engine undergoing mounting scrutiny, this executive shuffle has taken place. The size of the company, data privacy practices and potential impact on society have been questioned by the regulators and politicians in the US and Europe.

Once the face of the company, Page has retreated from the public’s eye. It has been absent from the quarterly earnings calls of Alphabet and has not appeared at big tech hearings on Capitol Hill.

Back in 2018, the Senate Intelligence Committee called Page to investigate foreign election meddling.

Bloomberg Businessweek published an article in 2018, titled, “Where in the World Is Larry Page?” However, Page has invested in flying car startups.

Google is also facing growing issues with its own employees. For instance, just last week Google fired many outspoken workers for allegedly violating its data-security policies. But employees have been accusing Google of silencing its critics.

Pichai took over as CEO of Google back in 2015. He is known for his engineering skills and general likable traits. Prior to being the CEO of Google, he has held different positions in the company.
