Google earns more from Windows than Microsoft

Microsoft boss Satya Nadella put forward a surprising thesis in an interview. In his opinion, the Internet company Google is currently making more money with Windows as an operating system than Microsoft itself.

Nadella: Microsoft has lost the browser

According to Nadella, a big opportunity was missed in recent years when they “lost the browser to Google.” What this means is that thanks to Chrome’s presence as the dominant browser on Windows, the Internet company now has the opportunity to generate gigantic revenue from its users’ search queries.

That’s why he often says that thanks to Windows, Google makes more money than Microsoft itself, said Nadella in one Interview podcast. However, this is also an opportunity for Microsoft, because it is in a good economic position thanks to its successful cloud services and can now recapture further growth opportunities by regaining the sources of money under Windows. Copilot is supposed to bring Microsoft forward again

At the moment, efforts are being made to make the in-house browser Edge more popular, thereby promoting Bing and MSN and creating a new search interface with Copilot. Nadella sees Copilot as an opportunity to regain the upper hand in the search business. The point is to get users to use Copilot for things where they can make money with advertising.

This could be product searches or research before buying new goods. As soon as users use Copilot not only for accessing knowledge, but also for “commercial” purposes, they will also have the chance to regain Google’s position as the main earner on Windows, according to Nadella’s logic. The same interest is being pursued on other platforms with Copilot and the close cooperation with OpenAI.

It was therefore good news for Microsoft when Apple recently announced a cooperation with OpenAI as an AI partner for its AI services called Apple Intelligence. Microsoft is one of OpenAI’s largest investors and provides much of the infrastructure behind ChatGPT. For years, the Redmond-based company had previously been unable to conclude a deal with Apple for the use of Bing as the standard search engine on iOS and macOS – Google still dominates there too and earns money from the placement of advertising in the search.
