Google ends support for third-party Assistant Displays

When it comes to third-party Assistant displays, the list of options was always constrained. We are well aware of Google Assistant-powered smart displays. Besides tech giant Google, several other brands offer Assistant displays like LG, JBL, and Lenovo. These offerings are accompanied by distinct form factors or at a low price tag. Till now the experience provided by Google and non-Google smart displays was quite the same. However, this might not be the case in the future as the tech giant Google is going to end software support for any third-party smart displays.

This information comes from folks at 9to5Google who first identified the changes in the Duo’s support page. The modifications in the policy will be visible with the smart speakers and displays. In addition to this, the company asserts that the quality of video calls and meetings could be impacted on non-supported third-party devices in the near future. Well, the list of devices that will no longer receive updates includes the following:

  • JBL Link View
  • LG Xboom AI ThinQ WK9 Smart Display
  • Lenovo Smart Display (7″, 8″, and 10″)

To shield consumers from offensive web content, Google last year disabled the web browser on third-party smart displays. It’s practically the end of the road for them given that the firm no longer offers upgrades for third-party Assistant displays. For displays using Google Assistant from third parties, the writing was already on the wall. They never received the Fuchsia update, unlike the Nest Hub, so it was just a matter of time before Google stopped supporting them.

Given this information, it is not like that Google will impact the functionality of any third-party smart display rather they will continue working the way they do. The only exception is that they will not receive updates.
