Google filed appeal against European Commission’s $5 billion Android fine

One of the well-developed technology companies, Google has filed an appeal against the $5 billion fine imposed by the European Commission in July.

The information said that the European Commission imposed fine on Google for illegally using the Android smartphones to make its search engine stronger than ever before.

As per the decision by the European Commission, Google has been given 90 days to finish the anti-competitive behaviours through the Android devices or face the additional penalty.

A report, published in The Verge said that Google had filed an appeal against the decision on Tuesday.

The European Commission said, in a decision, that since 2011, Google has imposed illegal restrictions on the manufactures of Android device and the other mobile network operators to make its dominant position stronger in the general search on the Internet.

The Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said, “Our case is regarding three types of the restrictions that have been imposed by the Google on the manufacturers of Android devices and other network operators to make it sure that the traffic on the Android devices lands on the Google’s search engine”.

It is pertinent to mention here that Commissioner Margrethe Vestager is in charge of competition policy.

“In this way, the technology company has used the Android operating system to strengthen the dominance of its search engine. These practices by the Google have contest rivals the chance to innovate and compete on the merits”, he added.

However, Google has denied European consumers the benefits of effective competition in the important mobile domain. Therefore, as per the European Union antitrust rules, this is illegal, Vestager said.

While responding to the European Commission’s ruling, Sunder Pichai, the CEO of Google said in July that the company will file an appeal against the decision.

As per the Google CEO, the decision ignored the fact that the Android operating system competes with the iOS smartphones.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump had also slammed the European Union for fining the Google, tweeting that the incident proved that the bloc has “taken advantage of the United States, but not for long!”
