Google has made major improvements to the cameras of the Google Pixel 9 series

The Google Pixel series has made a name for itself over the past few years with its good photo capabilities. Now it seems that the next generation will once again take a big step in terms of camera hardware. There are upgrades from the Pixel 9 to the Pixel 9 Pro XL. TikTok

Pixel packs splendid pixel power

Over the years, it has been quite common for the Pixel series to have little change to the camera hardware between generations. Google relied heavily on the interaction between the known sensor and adapted software, often with very good results. In this respect, the photo and video equipment of the upcoming Pixel smartphones represents a real leap. How Android Authority reported, all upcoming models are expected to have comprehensive new camera hardware. In the Pixel 9, the aging Sony IMX386 ultrawide sensor is being replaced with the brand new IMX858 model. There are many years of development between the sensors, and a significantly higher light output is expected. The smallest Pixel is also finally getting an autofocus on the front.

The cameras of the Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL

The high-end models Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL show how much Google obviously likes the Sony IMX858. The sensor is used in three places in the models: ultrawide, telephoto and as a selfie camera on the front.

The latter should give the upcoming Pixel models excellent selfie capabilities. The sensor is certainly unusually large for a front camera. For the main camera, the company is using a 50 megapixel Samsung GNK model.

The fold is weird

At first glance, the camera equipment of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold seems strange this year. Google has swapped both selfie sensors, but is using more frugal models – from the Sony IMX355 to the Samsung 3K1. According to our colleagues at Android Authority, this downgrade is probably due to a development: Google has made the new Fold device 2 mm thinner, which means that space has to be made inside.
