Google Home Gemini Extension: Smarter Smart Home Controls for Everyone

In November 2024, Google introduced the Google Home Gemini extension, initially available only to Public Preview program users. Now, two months later, this smart home upgrade is rolling out to everyone, making it easier than ever to control your thermostat, lights, and other smart devices with natural language commands.
Talk to Gemini for Seamless Smart Home Control
With the Google Home Gemini extension, you can simply talk to Gemini in natural language to manage your smart home. It even understands multiple commands at once. For example, you can tell Gemini to “set the dining room for a romantic date night” or ask it to “help me clean up the kitchen” by starting the vacuum.
However, security limitations from the Public Preview still apply. Gemini cannot control security devices like cameras, locks, gates, or garage doors. Instead, it will prompt the Google Home app so you can complete these actions manually (via The Verge).
Additionally, the extension cannot broadcast messages on connected devices, add or remove devices, or execute routines.
Revamped Thermostat Controls
The Google Home Gemini extension also includes redesigned thermostat controls that now align more closely with the Google Home app interface, making it easier to manage your home’s climate.
Devices You Can Control With Gemini
Here’s a list of smart devices you can control using Gemini and the Google Home extension:
- Lights & Power: Lights, outlets, and switches
- Climate Control: Thermostats, air conditioners, heaters, fans
- Window Coverings: Curtains, blinds, shutters
- Media Devices: TVs, speakers
- Other Smart Devices: Coffee makers, washers, vacuums
Control Non-Sensitive Devices From Your Lock Screen
Another handy update is the ability to control “non-sensitive” smart home devices directly from your phone’s lock screen. You can also adjust volume and playback on smart speakers, TVs, and displays through the Gemini app.
Gradual Rollout
According to Google’s support page, the Google Home Gemini extension is rolling out gradually, so it may take a few weeks to appear for everyone. If you weren’t part of the Public Preview, sit tight—it’s on its way.
With this expansion, Gemini continues to position itself as a replacement for Google Assistant, offering a more intuitive and powerful way to manage your smart home.
