Google Introduces “Whisk,” an AI Image Remixing Tool

In December 2024, Google unveiled “Whisk,” an experimental AI-powered image remixing tool, as part of Google Labs. Initially launched in the US, Whisk offers a fresh approach to image creation by letting users drag and drop images instead of relying on lengthy text prompts. It’s designed for artists and creatives who want to explore visual ideas quickly and easily.
How Whisk Works
Whisk stands out because it requires users to upload three images:
- One for the subject
- One for the scene
- One for the style
Using these inputs, Whisk combines elements from the images to generate unique digital artworks. However, since only a few characteristics are extracted from the uploaded images, Google emphasizes that the results may not always match expectations. To help users refine their creations, Whisk includes an option to edit and adjust the underlying prompts.
Powered by Google’s Latest AI Technology
Whisk utilizes Google’s Gemini AI to analyze the uploaded images and craft detailed prompts. These prompts are then processed by Imagen 3, Google’s latest image-generation model, to produce entirely new images.
Google describes Whisk as a creative exploration tool rather than a traditional image editor. “In our early testing with artists and creatives, people have been describing Whisk as a new type of creative tool — not a traditional image editor. We built it for rapid visual exploration, not pixel-perfect edits,” Google explains.
