Google is Discontinuing YouTube’s Classic Desktop Interface

By March 2020, Google is planning to discontinue YouTube’s older desktop interface. Three years after introducing the newer version, Google has decided to discontinue the older one.

Back in August 2017, YouTube on the desktop was overhauled with a material design-based interface. Till now users were given the option to toggle back and forth between the old and new design. YouTube launched new features for the new desktop interface which were not available on the older desktop version. So now Google has decided to discontinue the older, outdated version of YouTube.

From next month, the users will only be able to access the newer version of YouTube. Those users who are still using the outdated interface will be given a notification asking them to switch to the new YouTube.

Also, it must be noted here that users might have to update their browser if it is not compatible with the latest version of YouTube.

The changes that YouTube introduced to the interface include a “clean” material design and features like dark mode

The original announcement stated, “Our new look applies Material Design to YouTube and delivers a fresh, simple and intuitive user experience that lets content shine – because there’s nothing more important than the creators and videos we all love to watch. My favorite feature of this new desktop design is Dark Theme, which turns the background dark while you watch for a more cinematic look.”

Since then YouTube launched many new features like live streaming, improved support for vertical videos and another refresh in 2019.
