Google Is Restricting Adblockers In Chrome 80

According to a recent report published by a German source, Google is working on restricting all Ad blockers in Chrome, the new set of rules Manifest V3, Google mulls to make extensive changes to the interfaces of Chrome. Google has already integrated the changes in the Canary version. The project is quite controversial as it intensively restricts adblockers.

Google said that the implementation is still in an early state, Manifest V3 affects both the Chrome browser and Chromium open-source engine. It is also reported that Microsoft Edge would also be affected due to the changes. However, Ghacks reports, that it is still unclear when the old manifest V2 will be discontinued and the new stable version of Chrome 80 will be released by February 2020.

Adblockers would be intensively restricted

According to manifest V3, the blocking function of WebRequest API would be replaced, the power is going to Google hands rather than adblockers. In the future, browser extensions will only be able to read page requests and will no longer be able to block or modify them. The major difference is that Chrome itself modifies the web pages and ad block requests, on the other hand, adblockers can only resort to this with restrictions, since the API can filter up to 150,000 elements at the same time.
