Google Keep Tests One-Tap Note Creation Feature for Easier Access to Text Notes

Google Keep is working on simplifying note-taking by testing a new one-tap text note creation feature. The trial, spotted in version 5.25.014.03.90 of the app for Android, introduces a toggle in the settings menu that directly launches text notes with a single tap.
A Return to Simplicity
Back in November, Google Keep revamped its interface by integrating Material You theming and updating the Floating Action Button (FAB). This redesign transformed the FAB into a menu with four options, which required an additional tap to create a new note. While visually appealing, the extra step made note creation slightly less convenient for users accustomed to the previous single-tap process.

To address this, the newly tested toggle restores the option to prioritize text notes, letting users create them instantly. When activated, tapping the FAB generates a text-based note without altering its design, size, or color. This change essentially reverts the button’s behavior to what users experienced before November 2024.
What’s New and What Stays the Same
Enabling the single-tap note creation toggle won’t remove access to other note types, such as drawings, recordings, and checkboxes. However, these options are relegated to a “+” button within the text note interface itself. Users who prefer the current multi-option FAB design can opt not to activate the toggle, ensuring customization based on personal preferences.
Gradual Rollout
The feature appears to be rolling out gradually, with reports suggesting that availability may depend on a server-side update. However, its presence in the app’s latest version hints that a wider release could be imminent. Google Keep’s multi-tiered FAB design also underwent a testing phase before its public launch earlier in the year, indicating that this trial may follow a similar path.
By testing this toggle, Google Keep reinforces its commitment to balancing user feedback and innovation, ensuring the app remains accessible and functional for a variety of note-taking styles. Whether the previous complexity frustrated you or the multi-functional FAB excited you, this update offers a middle ground for everyone. Stay tuned for more updates as the rollout expands!
