For people who do not own a measuring tape, there is Google Measure. It is a digital substitute for a physical measuring tape. The app has recently received a much needed update which is bound to please the users. In contrast to the earlier version that was limited to Google’s augmented reality (AR) platform Tango — the new and improved Measure works with any smartphone supporting ARCore. In other words, any device that runs Android 7.0 and above.
Apple is a strong competition in the market. They recently put the grip on with its ARKit 2, which aims to introduce persistent AR and shared experiences. In this sense, Google’s Measure could not have come to the market at a better time than this. In the update of OS 12, Apple has also introduced its own version of the Measure app. When we look at the name, we see that it is an app that enables the user to estimate the length, width and areas of the items found in real life, which you can do by dragging specially designed tools and then save images for when you need them in the future.
As Google said goodbye to Tango, ARCore technology was the one to take its position as the next serious endeavor in the realm of search and development of augmented reality. It’s essentially a software development kit (SDK) that allows developers to create AR apps, and superimpose 3D objects onto real-world locations. Back in March, Google showed off 60 new apps relying on ARcore technology — a number which is likely to grow as the nascent AR field matures.
