Google: Offices Will be opened by June But Majority of Employees Continue Working From Home

The U.S. government has continued to insist that businesses can start transitioning back to regular operations but most industries are taking a more careful approach than recommended by federal guidelines. Like many companies, Google has shifted almost entirely to remote work, but CEO Sundar Pichai is reportedly planning a return to offices next month for more employees.

CNBC has received an email from Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai sent to Google employees stating that the company’s offices will reopen as early as June. However, the initial goal is to work in offices for only 10-15 percent of employees, and people who can continue to work from home will do so.

The email reads:

“We’re starting to really get the hang of these virtual meetings, though I do miss the experience of having so many of us in the same place. It may be awhile before that’s possible. Our ramp back to the office will be slow, deliberate and incremental.”

Pichai also stated that about 5 percent of Alphabet’s employees currently work from offices, with some regions (such as offices in the Asia Pacific region) operating at a capacity of up to 30 percent.

Google also announced a May 22 company holiday designed to give employees a brief break from the stress of … Well, well … All of it. “Take the time to do whatever you need to do to make your wellbeing a priority,” said the email.
