Google opens the platform for video and browser apps

Android Auto gets several functions that have long been desired, namely video and browser apps. The new functions are strictly regulated: videos only run when the vehicle stands and require Android 16.

New app categories for more entertainment

Google announced at its developer conference I/O 2025 that Android Auto will support two new app categories in the future: video and browser apps. However, these apps – of course because of security – will only work under certain conditions.

For the video apps, the connected smartphone must run with Android 16, it must not be in motion and the vehicle must also be compatible. How 9to5google Citing the Android Developers Blog reported, the weather app category has now been released from the beta phase. Developers can now publish weather apps for Android Auto and Vehicles with an integrated Google system without needing additional permits. The only prerequisite is to comply with quality guidelines.

Security has priority

The system supports main units controlled by both touchscreen and keys. In order to minimize distractions of the driver, the supported operation is recommended by voice command. This should also be helpful for the announced browser apps, here the applications are certainly primarily used as “windows” that supports the Gemini assistant.

As already mentioned, video playback will only be possible for security reasons if the vehicle is parked. This restriction is intended to prevent drivers from being distracted while driving, which would be a significant security risk. Android Auto was first presented in 2014 and has since developed into an important platform for the integration of smartphones into vehicles.

The software now supports numerous apps, including navigation, music streaming and messaging services. The expansion with video and browser apps could be particularly interesting for electric vehicle owners who are looking for entertainment options during the charging process. The new functions also offer additional comfort for passengers on longer trips or waiting times. However, some well-known car manufacturers do not offer Android car support. Tesla, for example, does without Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and instead offers its own premium confectionality package.
