Google Photos gets Nano Banana: AI editing becomes more personal

Google integrates the Nano Banana AI model into Google Photos and enables personalized image editing via voice command. Ask Photos reaches over 100 countries (not yet the EU), while new AI templates simplify creative editing.
Nano Banana revolutionizes Google Photos
Google is adding advanced AI features to its Photos app, taking a significant step toward personalized image editing. The company is integrating its powerful Nano Banana AI model directly into Google Photos while expanding the availability of the Ask Photos feature to over 100 countries worldwide. The new features aim to simplify image editing while delivering more precise results.
Considered Gemini’s top-rated image editing model, Nano Banana brings capabilities that go far beyond traditional filters and adjustments. Like from a current one Google blog post As can be seen, the new features are already available to many users, with a gradual rollout planned. One downer is that many of the advanced features require a paid Gemini subscription.
Personalized editing with facial recognition
One of the most notable innovations allows users to specifically edit specific people in their recordings. The system uses images from private facial groups to create personalized and precise edits of people in the photo library. Smart photo editor that recognizes people in Google Photos
Users can now provide specific instructions such as “Remove Riley’s sunglasses, open my eyes, make angels (sic) smile and open her eyes.” The AI system automatically recognizes the relevant people and makes the desired changes without the need for manual tagging. In addition, Nano Banana enables completely new types of image transformations in the photos editor. For example, users can have their photos designed as a Renaissance portrait, create an image as a mosaic of colorful tiles, or transform their photo into a page from a children’s book.
AI templates make creative editing easier
To make it easier to use the new AI functions, Google is introducing ready-made AI templates. These will initially be available in a new “Create with AI” section in the Create tab for Android users in the US and India. Google Photos can use AI to transform users’ images
The templates are based on popular editing requests and allow you to instantly transform images. Examples include “put me in a high fashion photo shoot,” “create a professional headshot,” or “put me in a winter holiday card.” In the coming weeks, Google plans to introduce personalized templates that leverage insights from individual photo galleries. These are intended to create edits that are tailored to users’ personal hobbies and experiences.
But this is only available in the USA for now. In parallel with the integration of Nano Banana, Google is significantly expanding the availability of its Ask Photos function. The tool, which helps make it easier to find specific photos and search the gallery for information naturally, is expanding to over 100 new countries and 17 additional languages this week. Ask Photos works through simple voice commands: users describe what they’re looking for and Google Photos displays the most relevant photos and information.
This can be particularly helpful for large photo collections where manual searching would be time-consuming. Additionally, Google is introducing a new “Ask” button that appears when viewing individual photos. This makes it possible to ask questions about the image content, find related moments or describe editing requests. This feature is initially only available in the USA.
