Google Photos launches its own version of the popular Spotify Wrapped

Google Photos is testing an annual review for 2024, similar to Spotify Wrapped, but for images. The new function summarizes photo habits and shows highlights such as dominant colors, most common faces and longest photo series of the year.

New annual review for Google Photos

Google Photos, the cloud storage service for photos and videos, is currently testing a new feature. Similar to Spotify Wrapped, users should receive a personalized annual review for 2024. This summary offers insights into your own photography habits and highlights from the past year. The new recap function is intended to cover a total of five different categories.

This includes, among other things, the predominant “vibes” of the photos, the most frequently photographed colors and the people who were most often seen in the images. It also shows who you were photographed smiling with the most and how long the longest series of consecutive days on which photos were taken was.

Again Google Support writes (via Android Authority), to receive a recap, users must have the Face Groups feature enabled and have taken enough photos throughout the year. Additionally, (US) users can also activate Gemini features in Google Photos with a special invitation for an enhanced recap experience.

Expansion of existing AI functions

The new annual review complements Google Photos’ existing AI-powered features. For some time now, the service has been offering automatically generated collections of similar photos and videos called “Memories” (soon to be renamed “Moments”). These are displayed prominently at the top of the Photos app and help users to find special moments, i.e. memories, more easily.

The introduction of the new recap function follows the trend of many online services to present “year in reviews” at the end of the year, inspired by the success of the well-known and popular Spotify Wrapped. For a service like Google Photos, which often stores thousands of personal images and videos, such a review seems quite obvious.

The five categories of the Google Photos Recap in detail

  • “Your Moods 2024”: Shows the top 3 moods/experiences based on the photos.
  • “Your Year in Color”: Presents the color palette of the year.
  • “Your Most Photographed Faces”: Highlights the most photographed people.
  • “A Year Full of Smiling Faces”: Summarizes the number of smiles captured.
  • “Longest streak”: Shows the longest streak of days of photo shoots.

For users who value privacy, it is important to know that the Face Groups feature must be enabled to receive the annual review. This could be a reason for some not to use the feature.
