Google Search Web Dark Mode Starts A/B Testing

Google is now again testing the display of its search engine and search results on the desktop in a new “dark mode”. The new “Dark Theme” is apparently to be rolled out in the near future. The display is based on the system settings.

As 9to5Google reports, Google is actively working on offering a complete dark mode for its desktop search as well. A new A / B test is currently in progress, in which some users can see the Google desktop search engine in a new “dark theme” if the appropriate settings are made on their device.

Anyone who currently opens Google’s US version in an incognito window can, with a bit of luck, already have a look at the “black” version of the search engine. However, this presumably presupposes that you are also travelling with a US IP address. If you are one of the chosen ones, you will see a box in which Google informs the user that “The dark theme is now available”. You can then quickly and easily activate the new setting via a link.

In the search settings, Google then offers the option of activating dark mode whenever you have activated a dark design on the respective operating system. Usually, most web services offer a dark mode regardless of the respective system design so that Google is at least in an unusual way in this regard.

Apart from the use of dark tones, nothing has apparently changed in the layout and design of the search results and the input page. The fonts and symbols have been adapted for a dark background, but functional changes are supposedly not to be seen in the current tests. The dark mode is not yet working reliably and permanently and its scope is not yet complete.
