Google to Roll Out Updates Every 4-weeks Instead of 6-weeks Cycle

On the verge to offer better performance, Google announces to roll out updates for Chrome within a span of 4 weeks, rather than 6 weeks. The first rollout for Chrome would be released in Q3 of 2021.

In a recent announcement by Google, the time period to improve security issues and bug fixes for Chrome would be reduced to 4 weeks.

Chrome’s faster release cycle will allow Google to test out new features with Chrome origin trials more effectively. However, it doesn’t mean that users would get to see more of the updates quickly.

On the other hand, these frequent updates would be upsetting the IT admins and enterprise users, for which the company is adding a new Extended Stable option for Chrome that would receive milestone releases every 8 weeks in order to give additional time to enterprise users and Chromium embedders for managing updates. In comparison, important security fixes would be rolled out every 2 weeks.

According to Google, the current version of Chrome which arrived on August 31, will be the last stable build to follow the old 6-week timeline. The next version i.e. Chrome 94 would adopt the faster release cycle and is said to be released on September 21, instead of October 12.
