Google TV Removes Nine Free Channels From Its Freeplay Library

Last year, Google TV rebranded its free channel offerings and introduced the FreePlay app, complete with a much-needed interface upgrade. Since then, the platform has grown significantly, adding over 50 new channels to its library and reaching an impressive total of 171 free channels by late 2024. However, Google’s recent moves suggest a bump in the road, as nine free channels have now been removed from the lineup.

This isn’t the first time Google has trimmed its FreePlay library, but it’s the largest single removal to date. According to 9to5Google, most of the removed channels were part of a single batch added last September. Speculation points to a potential issue with Cinedigm, a company that operates many of the removed channels, possibly due to a content partnership falling through. Unfortunately, Google hasn’t shared any details, so it’s unclear whether these channels will make a return.

Here’s the list of channels that are no longer available in the FreePlay library:

  • The Hill TV
  • Dog Whisperer with Cesar Milan
  • Dove Channel
  • Comedy Dynamics
  • The Bob Ross Channel
  • Shades of Black
  • OutTV Proud
  • Dazn Ringside
  • Dazn Women’s Football

Despite this shake-up, Google TV’s FreePlay library still offers 162 free channels. You can enjoy this wide selection without the need for additional apps or creating accounts. To access the free channels, simply head to the “Live” tab or use the dedicated FreePlay app.

If you’re looking for even more options, third-party apps like Pluto TV, Plex, HaystackNews, and Tubi are excellent alternatives for free live content. Whether it’s entertainment, news, or niche programming, Google TV continues to offer plenty of choices for cord-cutters.
