Google will no longer be supporting Dropcam devices along with Nest home security systems from next year

An announcement from Google has clarified the end of support for several home products with the start of the new year. As per emails sent by Google today, the platform has announced that it won’t be supporting Dropcam security cameras and the Nest Secure home security system. These products will stop functioning by next year, on April 8, 2024. For reducing the impact of this latest amendment, the company is offering up some discounts that are attained through modern replacements, which include the vouchers from Nest Cam and ADT security systems.

Dropcam security cameras and Nest secure home security system will no longer be supported by Google

Both Dropcam devices and Nest Secure are still only controlled through the semi-retired Nest app; Google Home is not compatible with either. Dropcam cameras come in a variety of models, all of which are being retired. These won’t be available until April of next year, and video histories won’t be available through the Nest app either. If consumers with affected Dropcams are Nest Aware subscribers, Google will provide them with up to two complimentary Nest Cam indoor cameras. Dropcam users who aren’t paying members receive vouchers for 50% off.

It’s also time to say goodbye to the Nest Secure home security system. As stated by Google, these devices will no longer be working; they won’t be used in the Nest app or be able to connect to the internet at all. ADT’s replacement self-installation system with “an ADT Smart Home Hub, 2 Door/Window Sensors, and a Motion Sensor for free” is being made available by Google to “eligible Nest Secure users.” The kit won’t contain any Nest hardware, in contrast to the just-announced Nest/ADT bundles. Affected consumers can also obtain expert alarm monitoring for free for a year, but Google says you can cancel at any time. After that, it will cost $20 per month.

Legacy Works with Nest integrations are also being discontinued, according to 9to5Google, and even sooner: on September 29, all current Works with Nest smart home integrations will cease to work. In favor of Works with Google Assistant, Google began to phase out Works with Nest in 2019. (Which has since been rebranded to Works with Google Home). The simple line is that if any of your smart home automations still rely on outdated Nest-branded integrations, they will cease to function in September, despite the drawn-out and perplexing transition. Since most Works with Nest connections already have Works with Google Home equivalents, the impact of Works with Nest ceasing operations is probably negligible.

As it’s quite troubling to get rid of devices that you are used to, offering free replacements is a great move towards making customers comfortable with this latest change. If these items are still in your house, you can surely check out the email from Google so that you can get them replaced.
