Google Will Train 10 Million People In Africa In Online Skills

Google is planning to train roughly 10 million African citizens in the next five years in an online environment in order to enhance their employability skills, Chief Executive Said on July 27 according to Reuters.

During the conference in Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai told people that Google is ready to prepare another 10 million people for jobs. Google further explained the nature of training and said, it will be a combination of in-person and online training.

Google launched trusted contacts app to iOS

Google has announced on its blog that it will conduct the training in three African languages Zulu, Swahili and Hausa and ensure that 40% of the women are the part of this program. However, Google did not disclose the program cost yet.

Africa’s population is growing rapidly along with internet penetration and mobile usage which has increased dramatically over the past few years. The strong growth has tempted tech companies to focus on Africa for further growth.

Alibaba CEO Jack Ma has also visited some parts of Africa focusing on his business opportunities in Africa.

Google said that it will initially focus on some Africa countries such as Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya for mobile development training, but these countries may not offer Google and other tech companies with many opportunities like in China, India and Pakistan.

But the places Google is focusing on like Nigeria has little disposable income in hands, the mobile penetration also inclined towards more basic models, coupled with bad telecom infrastructure and slower internet speeds means less internet surfing. Tech companies like Google heavily rely on all these things to make money.
