Google’s Identity Check Feature Now Available on Pixel Devices

Google recently introduced a new security feature called Identity Check for Pixel phones, and it’s now officially rolling out to users. This feature adds an extra layer of protection by requiring both biometric authentication and a PIN/password to modify certain settings when you’re outside of trusted locations.

How to Enable Identity Check

Setting up Identity Check is straightforward. To find and enable the feature:

1. Open your phone’s settings.
2. Navigate to Settings > Security and privacy > Device unlock > Theft protection > Identity Check.
3. Alternatively, you can search for “Identity Check” in the settings menu.

Once there, you’ll need to designate trusted places, like your home or office, by typing in the address or dropping a pin on the map. Within these trusted locations, you can make system changes using either biometric authentication or a PIN/password.

How It Works Outside Trusted Locations

If you’re outside these designated locations, the feature steps up security by requiring both biometric authentication and your PIN/password for actions such as:

• Accessing saved app passwords or passkeys.
• Changing your PIN.
• Disabling Find My Device.

This is particularly helpful in scenarios like theft, where someone might force you to reveal your PIN. The added biometric requirement could prevent unauthorized access.

Availability Beyond Pixel Phones

Currently, Identity Check is exclusive to Pixel devices, including the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 8 Pro. However, Google has confirmed that the feature will expand to Samsung phones with One UI 7 and other Android devices later in 2025.

This enhanced security could be especially valuable for gig workers, like rideshare drivers, who often navigate unfamiliar or high-risk areas and face safety concerns.
