Gothic: The new trailer shows real gameplay for the first time

THQ Nordic has released a new trailer for the upcoming remake of the classic role-playing game Gothic. The video shows real gameplay scenes for the first time and also goes into more detail about the world and stories that players can expect there. When the original Gothic was released in 2001, it set new standards in the genre, especially with its lively world, gripping story and complex characters. From today’s perspective, however, the game already seems a little old-fashioned.

Better graphics and gameplay improvements

The remake, which is being developed by the Spanish studio Alkimia Interactive, not only gives the world of the role-playing game a new lease of life thanks to the Unreal Engine 5, but also brings a number of improvements. Nevertheless, the game seems to remain largely true to its model, as a four-and-a-half minute showcase trailer shows.

The background story has not changed at first. The focus is once again on the prisoner of a penal colony that is surrounded by a magical barrier. Since a revolt, the colony has been divided into three camps, with which players must forge alliances in order to ultimately uncover the secret behind the barrier.

Open game world

How this is ultimately achieved is entirely up to the players. They can freely explore the completely open world and help other prisoners – or leave them to their fate. In addition to the tasks already known from the original, the developers are also promising many new missions.

Improved routines and reactions from the NPCs make the world seem even more alive. There will also be improvements to the combat system, which continues to rely on a mixture of melee weapons, ranged weapons and magic. More complex crafting and more satisfying character development are mentioned here.

Still no appointment

The Gothic 1 remake will be released for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but there is still no release date.
