HDMI 2.2: New standard will show up at CES 2025

A new HDMI standard will be presented in January. It should be able to deliver higher bandwidths and resolutions. This has now been announced in a statement. However, there is a catch for customers.

New HDMI standard is coming

HDMI is the standard for transmitting sound and image material and can be found in practically every household with a screen. A corresponding connection is available on the computer, the games console and the television. The current version, called HDMI 2.1, delivers a data transfer rate of 48 Gbps, enabling the display of images in 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz.

As the HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. This can potentially cost a lot. However, no output device has yet been announced that officially supports the new HDMI standard. But that could also change at CES. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang will hold a keynote speech on January 6th in which he will most likely introduce the GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080.

On the same day, AMD will also hold a presentation where the company will probably show its first two RDNA 4 graphics cards, the RX 8700 and the RX 8800 XT. All four GPUs could then support HDMI 2.2 in addition to DisplayPort 2.1.
